Now the adventure of making something with the fabrics I printed in my workshop excursion. I got right on it! My initial thoughts were that I would make a tote bag with the Seaside sketches print and a lightweight raincoat from the Jardin print. Here is what actually happened in my sewing salon…
SEASIDE COLLECTION
This fabric is a poly canvas with a smooth finish, the sketches of seashells and ribbons printed beautifully in vivid colors. In the collection is a table cover, apron and tote.
My initial idea was to build a simple tote, but then I remembered a tote I purchased at Cannon Beach Oregon… a good challenge to prototype. This is my result… don’t look too closely! I used millinery buckram to stiffen the body. The base is 11″ and it’s 14″ tall without handles.
In addition, I made a table covering with elastic to secure the cloth from the winds. And there was fabric to make an apron [with pockets], perfect for shucking oysters in style… I’m happy with the collection.
JARDIN RAIN PULLOVER
This fabric is VERY light weight and the print is so fun I went for a minimal construction and ended up adding some embellishment at neck. Here’s where I started. The inspiration was a Eileen Fisher funnel neck pullover, I used those measurements to draft a Garment Designer pattern, used some unprinted nylon fabric to sew up a prototype… then made changes!
In the final I added length, a back yoke, side seam pockets and a stretchy belt. And it has all French seams. I made a gathered flower for the neck… it’s a Jardin after all!
Now to revisit those Burgundy & Lyon food and wine discoveries!
