Color week five

Grey is a neutral on the palette. Up until the 19th century artists would mix tones to achieve the desired effect, and many artists still like to mix a preferred grey. For me, I like the convenience of the mixed greys available in the tube. The first grey on my palette was Paynes Grey. This grey is a dark blue grey 1st recorded in 1835.

Here my grey or (gray in America) is Winsor & Newton.

Who was Payne? William Payne was an English painter 1760-1830. He was forgotten as a painter by the time of his death but his color name lives on!

Here I have used Paynes Grey for coastal sand and water …good for west coast scenes .
