Just in time for Valentines I discovered The Underpinnings Museum. Color this week had to be red and the ‘red lingerie’ exhibit at the museum fit the bill. The exhibit was mentioned on a recent episode of the podcast DRESSED. Today I made a visit to the digital exhibit on the underpinnings museum website.
Incediary: A History of Red Lingerie takes a look at underpinnings circa 1860s to 2017. Personally, I found the early underpinnings chapters [1-3] most interesting – with information on colors and dyes, pics of hand embroidery, and a 1885 maternity corset!
Many ladies who objected to gay red corsets, a few years ago, wear them now in preference to all others, as they retain their fresh, warm look all winter, and do not show soil.

I took the opportunity to make some sketches as I viewed the exhibition . Colors used include
- Carmine
- Permanent Alizarin Crimson
- Cadmium Red

Valentine Greetings!
