Book Arts

This week I attended a Book Arts conference in Monmouth Oregon, it was a 5-day event.  I took in two days of workshops, a trade show, an instructor and challenge exhibit, and a raffle where I actually won something.

There are certainly many talented book artists and here are some of the exhibit items:

I took a workshop to learn Japanese Stab Binding with Raluca Ianca. She provided authentic Momigami paper for the covers and Hanshi calligraphy paper for the signatures. We learned the process of putting the books together and various stitches for the spine. Here are my completed books and some of the steps in the process.

I also took a class from the creative Kit Davey, it was a Button Collection Book Workshop. Kit taught us the techniques for building a dimensional book using foam core covered with paper. Many of the students displayed buttons in the book but it can be used for different types of items such as seashells or pins, anything to be displayed in a little book.

A friend who attended the conference took on the challenge of making a Zhen Xian Bao Hardcover Sampler with instructor Rosemary Rae. She made it through the 2-day workshop creating this fabulous box and learning many complex folds.

It was a well organized conference with excellent instructors and participants who truly enjoy the paper and book Arts.
